Document Summary

The thai group performing in france and in germany. In our first class, we analyzed the difference between two tracks from west coast africa (see audio files 1 and 2 posted to course documents). The first example i played is an ethnographic recording representative of the authentic native repertoire, and it is based on a polyrhythmic structure performed on a wooden xylophone. The second track is a song, arranged with western instruments such as synthesizer, flute, bass, guitar and drums. We pointed out that this latter is not an example of authentic west coast african repertoire, but a westernized (pop) version of it, made it for the european and us markets. Thus we labeled track 2 as an example of world music , a genre that blends native elements with western (mainly pop) music. Although it may sound more agreeable to our ears, world music is problematic as it creates a misrepresentation cultures.
