Document Summary
Primates have retained a generalized postcranial anatomy. Retained five digits on hands and feet, allows them to better grasp things like tree branches as well as animals/insects they feed on. Retained two separate bones in the forearms, allows for mobility in that environment. Carnivores: high pointed cusps for tearing meat. Elephants: broad flat surfaces on cheek teeth for chewing tough grasses and plant materials. Primates: low, rounded cusps: generalized dentition to process the most types of food. Teeth in the upper and lower jaw. Heterodont dentition (incisors, canines, premolars, and molars) Insectivory: sharp crests for puncturing the outer skeleton of insects. Frugivory: low cups for crushing soft fruits. Folivory: well-developed shearing crests for cutting tough leafy material into small pieces. Madagascar, central and southern mainland africa, and se asia. Grooming claw on the 2nd digit of hind limb.
