Stage 1- trust vs mistrust 1st year of life. How can you tell if child sees the world as a safe place or not. Mother and child interactions are critical- good moms help develop egos that allows for better coping skills. Mom leaves but trusts that she will come back. Child learns to trust self and others. Respond to parental prohibitions (her telling us no) trust that parents know what they are doing. Transition from sucking to biting- pleasure and expression of aggression and anger, frustration. Sources of frustration- hunger, thirst, diaper change. What is baby being weaned from breast feeding. Mom leaves for work intimacy with partner resumption of own life. State of mourning reflected on better days. Virtue : hope- belief that losses failures, etc will not be overwhelming. Hope is something that is important because it reinforces the idea that there is going to be a better day.
