PSY E243 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Unconscious Mind, Personal Construct Theory, Personality Psychology
Document Summary
Maslow was fascinated by self-actualizers ( superior specimens ) and the characteristics that set them apart. Self-actualization is a need, but it"s not the only need we have. To maslow, it could only be addressed when other more pressing needs were satisfied. Higher-order needs are associated with living up to one"s potential, more distinctly human, growth-based. Lower-order needs have more motive force they pull attention away from higher-order needs: Must be satisfied to be able to direct full attention toward higher motives. Focused on cognitive structures that allow for and organize the construal process. Used the analogy of people as scientists. Each of us develops theories of reality, which aid in the construal process known as personal constructs. Supportive evidence leads to retention. i. e. professor burke makes an assumption that plumbers are untrustworthy. Disconfirming evidence leads to modifying conditions of applicability, revision of construct, or abandonment. Constructive alternativism: people decide for themselves which constructs to apply to events.
