BIOL 1414 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Leishmaniasis, Bubonic Plague, Lipid Bilayer
Document Summary
Next examination: wednesday when we return from break. Day nineteen: acellular slime molds or plasmodial slime molds exist a streaming coenocytic colorful filaments of cytoplasm that creep along as feeding on organic debris. The plasmodium is huge and consists of a cytoplasm with millions of nuclei inside of it. They produce spores called myxamoebae when water or food is limiting. Ex: physarum: cellular slime molds exist as individual haploid myxamoebae that phagocytosize bacteria, yeast and decaying vegetation. Secrete camp to attract other amoebae so that they can congregate into a sluglike. Do they fulfill an important role in the world. They are the base of the food chain in the oceans. They are not plants they are the forerunners of plants. They do exhibit an alternation of generations ( have a diploid stage and a haploid stage). Algae are highly varied with regards to types of pigments, reproduction, distribution, morphology and biochemical traits.
