Document Summary

Outline: types of mutations, effects, causes, repair. From both a genetic and molecular perspective. And sometimes mutagens in our environment cause mutations. Mechanisms our own cells have in place to fix mutations and restore wildtype" dna sequence. Genes exist to encode proteins and these proteins keep cell alive. These factories constantly survey themselves and fix parts when theyre broken. Dna is extremely durable and resistant to breakage and chain, but mutations occur; inherited changes in genetic information. Categories of mutations: in multicellular organisms, we define two broad categories of mutation: somatic and germ line, somatic cells are all of your cells except for gametes. Somatic mutations are mutations in dna of any cell except your gametes: in other words, the dna in gametes doesn"t have this mutation. Expanding nucleotide repeats: this is where the number of copies of a set of nucleotide repeats increases, creating a repeating sequence.
