BIOL11300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Tegmen, Stridulation, Orthoptera
Document Summary
Orthoptera: the order that contains grasshoppers, crickets, and. Chewing mouthparts large compound eyes long, thin antennae long sword shaped ovipositor. Modifications on legs, wings, or body that help them make sound. Prominent antennae, shorter than body lay eggs in small egg pods: one generation per year. Stridulation: rubbing pegs on legs against forewings to make noise. Tympana: auditory organs used to perceive plant feeders, some only eat one kind of plant other eat many. They regulate plant populations and are food for other animals. Some species of grasshoppers become locusts when there are too many of them in one place. A bunch of them will band together and swarm to move somewhere else. Solitary phase: when the grasshoppers are normal. They are light colored (green or tan) short wings, and display little tendency to migrate. Dark colors, long wings, display behaviors that cause bonding together. Causes: overcrowding, food availability, weather conditions.
