Document Summary

Correlational studies: measuring different variables to see whether the variables have a predictable relationship. Making predictions (prediction studies: no cause & effect- making connections without manipulating any variables, predictor variable- variable used to predict another variable, criterion variable- variable that is trying to predict. No manipulation: third variable problem- could be the cause of the relationship between the two original variables, directionality- which variable causes the effect on the other variable. Positive & negative correlations: perfect correlation: +1 or -1. Determining a correlation: scatter diagram, if there appears to be a linear relationship between the variables, they are likely to be correlated, spss or by hand to get a pearson product moment. Restriction in range problem: (correlational analysis) the failure to spot a real relationship between two variables because the range of scores on at least one of the variable changes that relationship.
