PREPARING TO PARTICIPATE
Chapter 10: Beginning and Ending the Presentation
10.1
Knowledge
Discuss why introductions and conclusions are important.
Your introduction is important because we need to start somewhere. Our intro sets the
tone for the entire speech. It includes all the points you are going to cover in an organized
fashion. The conclusions are also very important in a speech because you can’t just end
out of nowhere. You need to slowly drift your audience to the end with giving them any
last bit of information you have left. The conclusion also helps you recap your speech in
a shorter summary so your audience knows exactly wat you were talking about.
Application
In what ways does the introduction prepare your audience to listen to your speech?
What are the implications if you do not prepare them to listen?
The intro prepares the audience to become aware of what is about to be covered.
If the into is clear, the audience will have a clear sense of what the information is going
to look like once presented. It sets the tone for the rest of the speech (whether it’s going
to be serious, or a joke, or scary). If you don’t prepare your audience to listen, they might
be confused during your entire presentation, or they might not pay attention to you at all.
10.2
Knowledge
Name and explain the four goals for an introduction.
The four goals for an introduction are:
1. Capturing attention:
a. In order for your audience to become interested in what you are presenting
you need to have an attention getter sentence. This will draw them;
wanting to know more. You can use Rhetorical questions, quotes,
powerful statements, the audience’s imagination, a past story, humor, or a
recent event.
2. Establish Relevance of Your Topic:
a. This means the general information you are about to add throughout your
presentation should relate to your audience in some way to get them
interested.
3. Establish Speaking Credibility:
a. Having a credibility statement will help you explain your topic. For
example, my speech is on Disney World because I have been there 9 times
