Chapter 7: Locating and Incorporating
7.1.
Knowledge
Define advanced information seeking skill set.
Advanced information seeking skill set is when you are able to find good sources that
match and analyze your information that you want to present in front of an audience. This
is a major skill of becoming informative literate which a set of abilities or skills that are
received or recognized by your audience.
Application
How can becoming an advanced information seeker and information literate help you, as
a speaker and a consumer of information, make better decisions?
Having these traits can help us become a better speaker because it will give us the
ability to fully present our material, that we found and are now informed with, and get
full credible responses from our audience. Using this skill set we are going to be able to
determine what information we need, we can access credible and clear information, we
are going to be able to evaluate the information that we research, and we can infer what
information would be ethical and legal.
7.2.
Knowledge
Describe the three main components in developing a successful research strategy.
The three main components in developing a successful research strategy are:
1. Creating Research Questions:
a. This is where you come up with a set of questions about your Topic.
These are typically about what would like your audience to know and
understand after you are done presenting. The more research you indulge
yourself in, the more questions you can accumulate.
2. Generating a List of Synonyms:
a. During this component, the speaker should look up words that relate to
your topic. These can help you figure out what you want to talk about
during your presentation, and it can be helpful to use these synonyms
when you are continuing to look up more information about your topic.
3. Search Information Resources:
a. This is when you conduct your research through books, magazines, your
school’s database, or even just using the internet. Each one of these

sources can be extremely helpful to you while you are doing your research
on your topic.
Application
How does each part of the process help you to develop your speech topic?
Each part of the process helps us develop our speech topic because in order to figure
out what your topic is, you need to ask yourself questions on what you should write
about, these questions are also going to be asked from the audience and learned after you
give your speech. This step is the building structure of your entire speech. Next you need
to find things your topic can relate to if you want your information to be concrete.
Finding other similar meanings to your topic can lead to a whole new world of
information that you can add to your speech. The more information you have, the more
credible you can be. Finally, your sources are going to help you write out your entire
speech. Without sources, your credibility will decrease. You can conduct your research
through anything that will give you good concrete information. These all come together
to structure and organize your entire speech.
7.3.
Knowledge
List and define the five types of supporting material.
Five types of supporting material are:
1. Books:
a. Books are an ideal source of information when constructing a speech.
They can cover any form of writing as long as that topic relates to your
speech’s topic.
2. Journals:
a. Journals usually contain more specific data. Most journals are made first
hand and can include exactly what they were thinking about a certain
subject while creating the journal. Journals are involved in many different
fields of studies.
3. Magazines:
a. Magazines are sources used to get your attention. This means that they are
a very popular source filled with current events and “hot” topics. These
can be handy if you choose to do a speech on the Kardashians. They are
all over stores and media. There are even quotes from the Kardashians in
many magazines.
4. News Sources:
a. If you are going to use a newspaper or a news cast for your speeches
resources, you might need to pick current events topic. Newspapers
contain numerous amounts of information of recent topics.
5. Government Documents:
