Disability
oLegal Definition:
Disability is a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one
or more major life activities
Must have record of such impairment;
Or being regarded as having such an impairment
oMedical Model Definition:
Disability is an impairment that results in the partial or complete loss of,
or loss of the function of, a body part, organ, or system
Must have record of such impairment;
Or being regarded as having such an impairment
oSocial Model Definition:
Disability is the disadvantage or restriction of activity caused by a social
organization which takes no or little account of people who have
impairments
Impairment
oThe residual effects of disease, injury, or genetic disorder that disrupts physical,
cognitive, or affective functioning.
Impairments are prolonged conditions, but they are not necessarily
permanent
Handicap
oA handicap RESULTS from actions of the person with the disability or by society

A New Paradigm
Instead of viewing a disability as a limitation or an inspiration we need to view it as: A
DIFFERENCE
oThis difference in ability may require an accommodation
Removing barriers
Creating access through accommodations and universal design
Acceptance and appreciation of individual differences incorporated into recreation
programs and facilities
oIncludes age, gender, culture, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc.
Instead of persons with disabilities having to change to fit society, society needs to better
accommodate people with disabilities as the PEOPLE they are
