What is a Developmental Disability?
A sever and chronic disorder involving mental and/or physical impairment
oMust originate before the ages of 18-22 to be considered a developmental
disability
oLikely to continue indefinitely
oWill likely result in “substantial functional limitations” in at least 3 of the
following areas of major life activities:
Self-care
Receptive/Expressive Language
Learning
Mobility
Self-direction
Capacity for independent Living
Economic self-sufficiency
oExamples of Developmental Disabilities may include:
Intellectual Impairment
Learning Disabilities
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Cerebral Palsy
Intellectual Impairment
Clinically used as: Mental Retardation
oSignificant limitations in intellectual functioning
Scores below 70-75 on a standard intelligence test
Equates to 2 standard deviations below the mean
oSignificant limitations in adaptive behavior
Collection of skills needed to function in everyday life
