Literacy extends beyond the print only world of reading and writing. Literacies are shaped by contexts, participants & technologies. Today"s context including developing technologies, along with visual, audio, gestural, spatial, or multimodal discourses. Supposed to see that all children succeed standards by 2010. Help kids learn to read, meet & exceed standards. Give student an object to analyze and find the what ifs. Dimensions of literacy learning: linguistic making sense of words, cognitive making sense, critical thinking, sociocultural your understandings, developmental vygotsky example. He/she is probably never read to at home because his/her reading is so far behind. All they listen to is rap/country music, so they will never learn real english. Reading is obviously not a priority or they would have more books at home. He/she doesn"t read very often but has a lot to add to our conversations. They must have a lot of life experiences to draw on.
