Reflex: inborn automatic response for survival. (rooting reflex). Regular sleep: non-rem, infant is at full rest, face is relaxed, little movement, slow, regular breathing, 8-9 hours per day. Irregular sleep: rapid eye movement, gentle limb movements, occasional stirring, irregular breathing, infants spend 8-9 hours in this state per day. Stimulation of rem sleep is vital for growth of central nervous system. Drowsiness: infant is either falling asleep or waking up. Bod is less active than in irregular sleep but more active than in regular sleep. Quiet arousal: the infant"s body is relatively inactive, eyes open and attentive, breathing is even, Waking activity or crying: crying is the first way the baby communicates. Shows bursts of uncoordinated body activity, breathing is irregular, face is tense or wrinkled. Sudden unexpected death of an infant during the night. (one year of age or younger). Leading cause of infant mortality between 1 week and 12 months. Most likely occurs between 2-4 months of age.
