The anterior vagina is comprised of four tissue layers: Muscularis - (smooth muscle) inner circular is a well developed sphincter muscle between the anterior and posterior vagina. Outer longitudinal layer is a poorly developed sphincter. Mucosa - composed of secretory columnar epithelium and some ciliated columnar epithelium. Recesses from in between the vaginal wall and the portion of the cervix that protrudes into the vagina and creates these pocket-like folds.
