Development also proceeds top-down rather than bottom-up. Eyes mature earlier than the legs, and babies can look around sooner than they can walk. Proximodistal- advancing from center of body to outward. Independence of system assets that not all parts of the body follow the same timetable. Canalization- development tends to follow, and return to, a normative course. Ex. a while who become sick approximately 1 year fell behind expected growth pattern but recovered by age 4. Experience- expectant processes-prewired processes in the brain (example would be the reflexes we will discuss in a bit) Experience- dependent processes- brain processes that involve the action formation of new synaptic connections in response to the individual"s unique experience. Reflexes are simple, involuntary responses to certain stimuli. Most develop before birth and are normally present 4-8 months after birth. Root reflex: corner of mouth the mouth will follow whatever side the finger is touching.
