Spina bifida: a developmental condition in which the spinal cord does not close completely. Anencephaly: a developmental condition in which part of the brain does not develop. Teratogen: any environmental substance that can have a negative impact on fetal development and possibly result in birth defects or even death. Rubella: german measles, a disease that can be devastating for the fetus if the mother contracts it during the first 3 months. Fetal alcohol syndrome: a pattern of disabilities found in babies and children of mothers who consumed alcohol during pregnancy. Sudden infant death syndrome: unexplained death, usually during the night, of an infant under one year old. Sensitive period: a time in development during which the organism is especially vulnerable to experience.
