Radio: radio has had an enormous impact on society. Set expectations for all broadcast media: 90% of the population uses it each week. The electromagnetic spectrum: 1860s maxwell theorized about the possibility of radio waves, hertz called what he discovered invisible light . Maconi and the inventors of wireless technology: development stage (1890s) Tesla: serbian-croatian first to demonstrate transmitter to receive communication. Popov: russian academic did same thing up to 600 years away. Marconi: italian engineer read hertz"s work and developed device to transmit code. Italian minister for post and telegraph wasn"t interested and so established british marconi (1897) and american marconi (1899) companies. Focused on military and commercial shipping because ships at sea had no contact with the world: wireless telephony. De forest: american wanted to complete with marconi. More interested in transmitting speech and music than just code. Created the audion vacuum tube that amplified radio signals a billion times.
