Total surprise for everyone- even the public. Russian public did not see the disassembly coming: they continue to complain, economic down fall. It seems improbable that the great ussr would suddenly disappear. Biggest issue: russia has the second largest quantity of nuclear war heads. Left unsecured after the fall of the ussr: solved by nunn-luger, no marshall plan- minimal aid. Us puts embassies in all post-soviet republics now independent counties. Yeltsin allies with us on serbian bombing during kosovo war. Enlargement of nato proposed over russia"s o(cid:271)je(cid:272)tio(cid:374)s. Yeltsin goes through battles with his legislature. His health is very poor: alcoholism, obesity, heart problems, etc. Communists are rallying: very possible comeback. Us supports oligarchs: to help yeltsin maintain control.
