One common scheme: elman r. service, four parts, band, tribe, chiefdom, states. Bands: small groups, few tens of people, high mobility, hunting/gathering economies, economically self-sufficient, no economic specialization. Tribes: multi-community societies in the thousands of people, sometimes up to a few tens of thousands of people, clans, define group membership; settled existence (typically agriculture, economically self-sufficient villages, no economic specialization. Fixed leadership positions, settled existence, agricultural economies, economically self- sufficient villages, and little, if any, economic specialization. Hereditary leadership is key characteristic of chiefdoms. Authority and influence over followers, yet they don"t always have the power to enforce their will.
