Document Summary

Joints: unions or articulations between two or more bones. Functional classes of joints - classified on the basis of degree of movement. Synarthrosis - no movement at all, good stability. Amphiarthrosis - small degree of movement, good stability. Diarthrosis - freely moveable, but not much stability. Structural classes of joints - classified on the basis of the anatomical features. Created when two bones fuse together (obliteration of cranial sutures, epiphyseal line) - frontal suture. Two bones separated by dense regular collagenous connective tissue. Exists between the frontal and parietal bones of skull coronal suture. No movement as edges are highly serrated and connected by short dense fibrous connective tissue. Between a tooth and osseous cavity in mandible/maxilla attached by strong fibrous membrane called periodontal ligament. Synarthrosis - provide stability by restricting all motion. Articulating bones joined by dense regular collagenous connective tissue or ligaments. Eg. radius and ulna (fibrous tissue), tibiofibular joint (ligament) Fibrocartilaginous joints have fibrous tissue between cartilage.
