Document Summary

All substances have bonds between the molecules these are called van der waal"s. Because hydrogen is so small, when it forms covalent bonds with oxygen the molecule is more polar. The bonds between the molecules are therefor much greater than in other substances. Density: how heavy a substance is for its size. Related to how closely packed together the atoms are. Total amount of material dissolved in water (but not including organic matter) Limited fresh water on earth and distributed unevenly. Today about 54% of available freshwater is used. Most water is in the ocean but it is unusable due to its salinity. Desalination could help us provide fresh water in coastal areas. As pressure increases with depth, density increases but not much because water is incompressible. Only significant in the deepest ocean temperature and salinity more important. Water masses in the ocean form layers in the ocean depending on their density and therefore temperature and salinity.
