ERTH 20 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Earth Structure, Outer Core, Cool Air
Document Summary
Vegetation covers less than 15% of its surface. Annual rainfall amounts to less than 10 inches (25cm) Desserts cover 25%-30% of earth"s land surface. Cool air over cold ocean water holds little moisture. The air absorbs moisture when it interacts with land. Above 66 degrees na and s latitude there is little air moisture. Three conditions are necessary to form a glacier: cold climate, snow must be abundant; more snow must fall than melts, snow must not be removed by avalanches or wind. Ice: the water mineral: ice (solid h2o) forms when water cools. Formation of glacial ice: snow is transformed into ice, glacial ice may form. Flow from high to low elevation in mountain settings. Two major ice sheets remain on earth. Large areas of the polar seas covered with ice. Global warming is causing a reduction in ice cover. End moraines form at the stable toe of a glacier. Terminal moraines form at the farthest edge of flow.
