HUM 2 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Perioeci, Helots, Ath
Document Summary
Athens and attica are a single political unit. Attica is single city-state with central govt. in athens. Severely limited evidence, documentary evidence for athenian constitution before 6th century is limited to two documents (fornara no. 15 is inscription made in 409/8, which republishes homicide legislation of draco dated to 621/620 (one of athens first lawmakers), amnesty law quoted by plutarch in life of solon) Mostly lost beginning of constitution of athenians. Not a constitutional document, just a treatise about it. Heracleides lambdus writes a decent amount of lost beginning. Thought to be work of anonymous student of aristotle. Local historians of athens used heavily by writer of ath pol. 2 methods of reconstruction of athenian history. Survival of older institutions in newer athens. Very difficult to prove anything (just make educated guesses) Latest possible date for attica as entire city-state is early 7th century. Argument that attica is not always with athens. Originally home to separate and individual villages.
