Document Summary

New york, new york - atlantic records. Raw and gritty recording of blues from chess records. Instrumentation is very stripped down with just drums, bass, vocals, piano, and harmonica. No guitar usually, midrange was reserved for brass such as saxophones. Invention of the transistor radios could be portable. Originated from the poorer neighborhoods due to lack of instruments. Instead of really large cathode tubes used to power radios, transistors made it so. Teenagers were having their own culture around this time. The radio was very available for them to choose who to listen to. Music would be more about sex and hanging. Myth made by parents that said that all blacks were just really horny and wanted to rape white poeples" daughters. Music that would basically state whatever they were gonna do. Usually made radio friendly by using euphemisms and double entendres. Disc jockey that promoted the mix of blues, country, and pop and coined the term rock and roll.
