PSYC 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Social Proof, Cognitive Dissonance, Social Influence
Document Summary
Conformity: yielding to the pressures of others (why we comply w norms) In general humans don"t like to not fit in: informational social influence: the influence of other ppl that leads us to conform bc we see them as a source of information to guide our behavior. Had to pinpoint how much light goes into dark room. Estimates of how much dot of light is moving converged over time (informational social influence) Participants did task individually and settled on a stable estimate. Came back 3 days alter and did the task in 3-person groups (but don"t discuss w each other) Autokinetic effect: illusion: the dot doesn"t move but if stared at it long enough, one will think it moves. Even if others are strangers we want to conform, then if it"s our family, friends the desire to fit in is even stronger. Participants made judgments on a bunch of lines.
