Social cognition: prejudice arises out of a natural process prejudice is an inevitable byproduct of the way we think. There are basic drives that we have that contribute to prejudice. Realistic conflict theory: the idea that limited resources lead to conflict between groups an result in increased prejudice/discrimination. E. g. , palestinians and israelis conflict over land, heritage, resources conflict over resources will increase prejudice and discrimination. Know 1 or 2 examples of each. Freud"s notion of thanatos (life and death instinct) Evolutionary psychologists argue that aggression is genetically programmed in men bc it enables them to perpetuate their genes. Easier to find a mate (powerful male gets the female) Ensuring it"s 100% their child, not others infants often look like their dad so they know it"s theirs (invest in the baby) Aggression behavior has been linked to activation of the amygdala emotion center, fear and aggression aggressive behaviors linked to activation of amygdala.
