PSYC 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Latency Stage, Genital Stage, Oral Stage
Document Summary
Freud: there must be a level of gratification at each stage. If there is too much gratification or too little, the person gets stuck/fixated at that stage. Then, we see it in their adult behavior. Can account for biting nails, alcoholism, etc. Most of the activity is oral stuff. Has to learn how to control biological processes. Person is overly concerned about cleanliness, reputation, etc. Person is not concerned enough about cleanliness, appearance, etc. Stage that the child grows too attached to the opposite sex parent. Must identify or become like the same-sex parent. Can"t push too much in one direction or another. Ideally want 15% id, 15% ego, 70% super-ego. Pushing something so far down that we are not even conscious of it. Ex: someone committed a crime of passion. But so out of character that their impulses broke down, out of character. Tell ourselves that something is not happening/true.
