Document Summary
Thomas holmes and richard rahe (1967) developed the social readjustment rating scale (srrs). It original scale listed 43 life events, and each life event is given a points value associated with how stressful it is. It"s important to note that events producing the greatest changes and challenges are given the highest values, regardless of if the events are positive or negative. Holmes and rahe have demonstrated a connection between life stress and major health problems. In addition to the major life stresses, it"s important to note that daily occurrences such as hassles can contribute to stress levels. Hassles: little stressors that include the irritating demands and troubled relationships that are encountered daily. According to lazarus, hassles cause more stress than do major life changes! Fortunately, in addition to daily hassles are daily uplifts - known as the positive experiences in life, which can neutralize the effects of the many hassles.
