PSYC 3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Animacy, Cognitive Psychology, Superior Temporal Sulcus
Document Summary
Early detection of animacy may have endowed hunter-gatherer ancestors with survival advantages. Biological motion- perception of animal (human and nonhuman) motion. Ability to perceive biological motion is innate and automatic. Bottom-up- older infants are more sensitive to human than nonhuman biological motion than younger infants. Own motor movement is related to perception of motor movement of others. People with asperger"s syndrome were worse on tests of motor skills and perceiving biological motion than normal people. People with paralysis of one arm did worse when perceiving point-light animate motion of others on their same arm. Dc, who was born without upper limbs, could identify normal motor movements. Neurons that respond to actions whether performed by oneself or someone else. These neurons assist in imitating and understanding other"s actions. Mirror neuron system findings: they seem to be necessary for imitation, they help people understand why someone is doing something.
