PSYC 3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 26: Biological Neural Network, Endel Tulving, Cerebellum
Document Summary
Retrieval is no longer dependent on hippocampus. Retrieval in this model is reactivation of the neural circuit. Process during which hippocampus replays neural activity associated with a memory. Activity occurs in network connecting hippocampus and cortex which results in formation of connections b/w cortical areas. Eventually cortical connections are strong enough so different sites in cortex become directly linked, and hippocampus is no longer necessary. Craik and tulving proposed that the more deeply you process info the better it is encoded. Example: memorize list of words with different depths of processing. Perhaps it is the number/area of brain areas involved. Classically conditioned emotional response that involves the amygdala. For an animal to produce a conditional emotional response, the amygdala needs to be working sends to hypothalamus and need cerebellum for a motor response. Emotional events, words, pictures increase the likelihood of encoding and consolidation. Amygdala always recruited when emotion in memory. Adds an emotional tag to the memory.
