SOC 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Human Capital, Social Forces, Nuclear Family
Document Summary
Traditional nuclear family: a nuclear family in which the husband works outside the home for money and the wife works without pay in the home. Nuclear family: consists of cohabiting man and woman who maintain a socially approved sexual relationship and have at least one child. (both parents work) Proliferation of non-nuclear families as a response to changes in power relations between women and men. Traditional nuclear families emerged along with inequalities in wealth that gave rise to male sexual and economic dominance in traditional nuclear families. Economic control: you see evidence of men being uncomfortable if the wife makes more money. Vast majority are common law even though marriage is allowed. Studies show that children growing up in households with same-sex parents are no different than children growing up in a nuclear family setting. Same class?: propinquity: you tend to like people you"re around, all about exposure.
