EPSY 202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Apgar Score, Egg Cell, Meiosis
Document Summary
One is inherited from the mother, and one from the father. When gametes (sex cells) combine, it is called meiosis. When sperm and ovum unite, the cell that forms is called a zygote. Chromosome pair 23 consists of sex chromosomes (female xx, male xy). Male determines sex of baby, because if a x bearing or y bearing sperm fertilizes egg. If each allele from each parent is alike, it"s called homozygous. If each allele is different, it"s called heterozygous. Dominant/recessive pairings: when one allele affects the child"s characteristics dominant. Chromosomal abnormalities: down syndrome, failure of separation during meiosis on 21 st pair. Apgar scale: used to assess baby"s physical conditions. Measured at 1 to 5 minutes after birth. 7 or higher means baby is in good condition, 3 or lower means serious danger. Natural/prepared childbirth: reducing pain and medical intervention so that childbirth is rewarding. Labor and delivery medication: drugs, such as an epidural are given in a hospital.
