Document Summary

Modern technical definition of culture: the complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, law, morals, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as member of a society . Anthropologists think of culture in terms of 3 main points: what people think. Human cognition: ex: creative revolution, what people do. Ideal vs real: what people say and believe about their culture is often different from their behavior in the culture, ideal = beliefs, values, etc, real = actions, behavior, etc. Culture is both individually experienced and shared/group oriented: something patterned. System of rules: something which is symbolically represented.
