Max weber: historian and one of the founding fathers of sociology, how is it that amongst so much change, society doesn"t just collapse, what give society order, with the modern world came more bureaucracy. Must have these characteristics: continuous organization of official functions and offices bound by rules (it"s an institution with a function, each office has a specific sphere of competence, offices exist in hierarchy, offices require technical qualifications. To fill the office people must be qualified: staff does not own office. You"re no longer given the title forever. The position can be taken away: acts, decisions and rules are recorded in writing. As modernity spread, more and more bureaucratic systems were becoming a thing. There"s no perfectly functioning bureaucracy, but weber thought these characteristics would create the perfect bureaucracy. Dealing with a difficulty presented to you: theoretical, substantive, formal-rational. Make sense of a complicated or abstract reality.
