CHEM-C 127 Lecture 1: Intro to graphing
Introduction to graphing:
Graphing data provides a way to visualize data
• makes it easier to interpret data
• easy way to present information to the public.
o simplifies interpreting data
o making conclusions from the experiment
o for both the researcher and the audience.
• When data is only presented as tabulated, relationships between variables are often
unclear.
• provides a way to determine whether or not a set of data is reliable.
• able to determine the line equation of the graph
o which can be taken further as a mathematical equation
• create multiple graphs with the same data
o determine which relationships are the most reliable
o data must be manipulated in different ways.
o comparing the line equation of the different graphs
▪ can determine which relationship is the most reliable.
▪ graph will have an R2 value either very close or equal to one.
All three of the graphs produced a linear relationship
• the graph that involved demonstrating the relationship between wavelength and the
inverse of frequency produced the most reliable relationship
