Document Summary

Original idea of united states was to have each state/colony by sovereign: our states are under federal gov"t- not sovereign, not technically states by definition. People from other colonies were foreigners: prejudiced against other colonies- different values, all more or less british, but divided- we bind ourselves to the mother country but not to each other . England gave many rights to citizens- possibly most in europe at time: in theory, everyone had equal rights, common law- applied throughout england, generally accepted. Idea of colonies was to transplant english gov"t and society (social structure) into. America and change what people disliked: ended up creating something different and new. Different environment, etc. caused necessary modifications, not planned. No nobles in new england- became problem- no born leaders: people who would not have moved up in english society had opportunity to in colonies- social mobility. Gender roles changed for survival: ex. women helped harvest crops.
