Intervened in europe, far east, latin america, caribbean: i took the canal zone . Strong desire for isthmian canal to connect atlantic and pacific oceans led to major departure in us-latin american relations. Roosevelt convinced us should be more int"lly active. Moved to consolidate power in caribbean/central america. Hay-bunau-varilla treaty gave us control of canal zone, guaranteed independence of panama. Actions angered many latin americans: the roosevelt corollary. Roosevelt issued roosevelt corollary to monroe doctrine- threatened latin. American nations with american intervention if they failed to keep finances in order. Latin american countries had tendency to default on debts to europe.
