Document Summary

There are powerful arguments on both sides of the debate but most of us agree that the united states is losing the war on drugs. The united states has a long history of revising policies regarding drug use and drug possession. Since the early 1900s the federal government has been addressing the most effective way to deal with the negative impact that illegal drug use has on individuals and communities (the united states war on drugs). The focus of their efforts wavers between punishment and compassion. The issue at the forefront of how to address the drug problem is whether or not it"s a victimless crime or does it lead to violent crime. Recently, a strong movement began among prominent lawmakers and members of the general public urging the decriminalization of nonviolent drug offenses. However many law enforcement agencies, politicians and citizens embrace the moralist view of punitive measures for drug users.
