Human development: scientific study of changes that occur throughout the life cycle. Used to be known as child psychology thinking that you stop developing/ changing after being a child. Longitudinal designs: research design in which 1 participant or group of participants is studied over a long time. Cross-sectional designs: research design in which several different age groups of participants are studied at 1 particular time different groups of people at once. Could be from environment or natural aging. Cross-sequential designs: design in which participants are first studied cross-sectional but then followed and assessed < 6yrs. Nature: the influence of our inherited characteristics (genes) Always an interaction between genes and environment. Locke: tabula rasa humans come into the world as a blank canvas and we came to who we are through experiences and environment. Out of control 3yr olds are more likely to be teen smokers, gamble, and criminals.
