PSY-P 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Trait Theory, Factor Analysis, Extraversion And Introversion
Document Summary
Factor analysis: statistical procedure used to identify clusters of test items to tap basic components of intelligence and personality. Extraversion and emotional stability (neuroticism) emerged as basic personality dimensions. Extraverts seek stimulation because normal brain arousal is relatively low. Dopamine and dopamine-related neural activity tend to be higher in extraverts. Type theory looks at personality as blocks and does not allow for movement. Trait theory looks at personality on a continuum. C onsciousness- do what you are supposed to do. A greeableness- want to get along with other, trusting. There"s an assumption that if you know a person"s trait you will know and predict their behavior. The person-situation was to determine what was more important, the person or situation. Behavior is influenced by the interaction of our inner disposition with our environment. Consistency of specific behaviors from 1 situation to another is weak; average behaviors are predictable. At any moment, a situational factor influences a person"s behavior.
