Psychological disorders: what is abnormal, defining abnormality. *joker/movie theater example: one psychiatrist said he was insane but one psychiatrist said he wasn"t insane; declared guilty but not insane because he told the police that his apartment was dangerous (was in the right mind to say this) *all cultures have different norms; have to look at behaviors from your personal culture. *drinking: not deviant in college culture (but could be maladaptive) *ocd: maladaptive because it takes time, bad for your health, and interfere with your relationships; adaptive behavior is impaired in terms of school/work/etc. Incidence of disorders: include substance abuse personal distress: report of great personal pain and suffering. -2 exceptions: mania (they feel great and full of excitement; on top of the world) and aspd; a type of personality disorder; anti-social personality. *disorders should be based on science more than culture: science has shown that there is no difference between psychological well being and sexuality.
