Still, this portion of workers comprised only about 5 percent of the population and their products met primarily local needs. A transformation was occurring slowly in urban areas however that transformed economies to industrial capitalism. 1800, europe and capitalism entered its industrial phase leading europe to diverge more sharply from the rest of the world. New sources of power and energy, coal and steam primarily, replaced wind and water as well as human and animal power to increase productivity. In order to maximize these new sources, labor had to be reorganized.
