Document Summary

Explain the 3 major distinctions between verbal and nonverbal communication. Explain the 5 ways in which verbal and nonverbal communication are interconnected. Verbal and nonverbal communication are connected in 5 of the following ways: repetition: when speaking and using nonverbal cues, we can express repetition in ways such as nodding our heads to mean. Define the following terms: kinesics, paralanguage, territoriality, proxemics, and haptics. Explain functional- professional touch, social- polite touch, and friendship-warmth touch. Paralanguage- vocal cues that are categorized into vocal characterizers, vocal qualifiers, and vocal segregates. Territoriality- a predisposition to defend one"s exclusive domain. Proxemics- the study of the influences that distance and territoriality have on our communication aka personal space. Functional-professional- this is the least intense form of touching because it usually takes place in a professional setting and is limited to the requirements of the situation. An example of this would be a caregiver adjusting a patient"s pillow.
