Document Summary

Function: give skeleton mobility, hold skeleton together. Joint formed by collagen (hold the two bones together) Syndesmoses- joint held together by a ligament. Gomphoses- little movement *peg in socket (tooth in socket)- periodontal ligament. Epiphyseal plate, joint between first rib and sternum. Synovial joint- articulating bone separated by joint cavity. Diarthrotic moves with free movement but not in every direction. Articular capsule: fibrous layer is for strength, synovial membrane-lateral border secrete synovial fluid, periosteum- where synovial fluid is made. *synovial fluid gives cartilage nutrients because cartilage is avascular. Articular disc (menisci) - layer of fibrocartilage and disc that separates joint cavity (protection) There found around joint layer of cushion and prote(cid:272)tion. Help pre(cid:448)ent fi(cid:272)tion so (cid:271)one doesn"t ru(cid:271) against ea(cid:272)h other. (cid:894)bet(cid:449)een (cid:271)one(cid:895) Least: articular surface- shape determine what movements are possible at a joint, ligaments- hold articulating bone together, muscle tone and tendons (always a little contracted)
