Document Summary

Proton (p+) - bears a positive electrical charge. Covalent bond - when electrons are shared in order for each atom to fill its outer electron shell. Ionic bond - chemical bond between atoms formed by the transfer of one or more electrons from one atom to the other. Hydrogen bond - when a hydrogen bonds with an electronegative atom (usually nitrogen or oxygen). Definition - sum total of chemical reactions occurring in the body cells. Dehydration synthesis - monomers are joined by removals of oh from one monomer and removal of h atom from the other at the site of bond formation --> makes polymers. Hydrolysis- monomers are released by the addition of a water molecule, adding oh to one monomer and h to the other. Classes of carbohydrates: monosaccharides: glucose, fructose, ribose, etc. 2 monosaccharides can come together through dehydration synthesis. Polysaccharides: starch, glycogen: multiple sugar, most for storage of energy.
