Post synaptic neurons are integrators which analyze information can be epsp/ipsp or combination if it receives one graded potential epsp, not at threshold, it can still produce an action potential by adding together(summating) several epsp"s & ipsp"s. Nt release-> opens channels of post synaptic neuron (produces a graded potential)-> increase number of stimuli over time -> increase nt released over time -> opens more channels -> post synaptic cell reaches threshold -> action potential. Spatial summation can excite/inhibit several excitatory pre-synaptic neurons release nt simultaneously each opening some ion channels -> threshold is reached -> action potential. Ipsp"s can be summated both spatially & temporally -> increasing hyper polarization. Most integration involves subtracting summated ipsp"s from summated epsp"s producing a net excitatory or inhibitory post synaptic neuron response. Neuromolecules/neuromodulators also enhance (pre-synaptic facilitation) or decrease (pre- synaptic inhibition) release of nt from pre-synaptic neuron. Rate received is affected by time or receiving multiple messages.
