It"s a series of images that tell a story. Comic strips: facial expressions used a lot, dialogue in balloons (in general, continuing characters, frames that show action. Physical likeness preserved, but liberties taken with the face: mistakes. Involves misunderstandings through gestures and words: visual pun, comic illustrations. Drawing relates in funny way to something in the text: humorous allusions. Reading comics and cartoons is not simple. There is complicated interplay between visuals and words. Comics visually generate a smile or laugh. The smile is a signifier: you received a message.
