Document Summary

The british model is where much of american policing was based. During the early years when a person was accused of committing an offense and could be identified, he/she was usually pursued by an organized pose. All able-bodied men who could hear a victims cry for help were obligated to join the posse in a common effort to apprehend the offender. The posse was lead by the shire reeve (the leader of the county) or by a mounted officer (the comes stabuli) words sheriff and constable were derived from these early terms. The development of law enforcement in english cities and towns grew out of an early reliance on bailiffs, or watchman. British police practices became codified in the statue of winchester written in 1285. The early 18th century saw the emergence of a criminal gang led by jonathan wild. Wilds gang would take and steal people belongings. In 1829 sir robert peel formed the world"s first modern police force.
