Islam- a vigorous form of monotheism that aspired to unify not only its home peninsula, but also the entire world, under a banner of allegiance to one god. Arabia before islam was one of the busiest places in the world. Arabia peninsula becomes important in trade because of war in the silk trade route: therefore, mecca was born and becomes very wealthy. Majilis: council of elders: decided who went to war, who married who, etc. Islam is the second largest religion in world after christianity. Believing in many gods was good for merchant business. Ka"ba is most important holy site house of god. Black rock is a physical symbol for god. Born in 570 raised by grandfather and later uncle. Worked on caravan up and down the red sea coastline first as a camel tender and later as a merchant. Grows up to become a respectful/honest manager and business man. Had 6 children only the 4 daughters survived.
